Om or Aum is a sacred and mystical syllable in theDharmic religions of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. This sound is used by those who desire to live their life conscious of their spiritual nature. The Hindu Scriptures tell us that Aum was the primordial sound of the Universe and that all of creation came from that sound. From the Christian Bible, the first chapter of Genesis states that, “ God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” It seems that there is agreement between these scriptures that sound initiated creation.
It is believed that Aum:
· Is a name of God.
· Is a prayer unto itself.
· Aides one in feelingyour connection with all of life.
· When spokenassists in balancing all of one’s chakras.
· Is a timeless mantra; it includes the past, present and the future.
· Is a profound spiritual efficacy used often in meditation. Created by the three sounds, a ( A-kara means form or shape as like the earth, or objects), u,U-kara means formless like air, water, or fire; m, Ma-kara means neither shape nor shapeless, like the universe.
AUM Meditation:
Prepare your surroundings and yourself formeditation.
· Sit comfortably, relaxed, in a chair or on the floor.
· Set your intention for this meditation.
· Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breathing.
· Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth, as you are able to.
· Take a deep breath and bring the syllable Aum into your consciousness, with all of its profound spiritual meanings. Now as you gently exhale say the syllable Aaaauuuummmmmm. Do not force your breath. As this sound gently fades off., breathe. Exhale. The next time inhale deeply, then gently exhale the word Aum again.
· Allow your breath and the sound to flow from you. Do this as many times as you like. You will feel a sense of peace and calmness with yourself. You will feel your throat vibrating. You may feel a bit lightheaded, expanded beyond your physical sense of self. You may loose track of time and space. This is fine. Allow yourself to “be” in this altered state. You are connecting with Divinity and your High Self.
· You will know when you are finished with this meditation.
· Sit in your silence. Allow your physical body to remember and store these feelings of peacefulness, calm, balance and connection to Divinity. Sit for a few minutes.
· Open your eyes when you are able to.
Exhale deeply releasing any thing that no longer serves your highest good.
· Express gratitude for this time and experience.
· Slowly stand. Drink water and possibly eat something; this will help to ground you.
· You may choose to journal your experience.
May you experience serenity and new awareness through this meditation.
Withthanks for you.
